Material Literacy and Visual Design

This article, or rather compilation of articles, is about the modern day shift into more visual and pictorial depictions of rhetoric and messages. Not all messages and written works need to be in written out words from letters of the alphabet, and it is common now that many works done via the computer are enhanced with fancy graphics and pictures. I think this is a positive shift in technology because it allows for more creativity and can even make a boring piece of text more visual appealing and more enticing to readers/viewers.

  1. I found it interesting that you decided to write on the shift into more visual depictions of rhetoric and messages. While that was definitely a part of the article, I focused more on the idea of the internet creating a shift in literacy. I agree with Faigley when he says the internet isn't to blame for a decrease in literacy levels. What do you think about this? Is the internet at fault or not?

  2. When I read Faigley's article, I responded with close to the same reaction as you did. I also agree that the use of other types of media besides writing will help society move forward in terms of discourse, and give those who may not excel in writing other creative outlets to express themselves.

Some people may disagree though, and see other uses of media, or the combination of them, as hindering people's writing development. Do you think the increase in the use of multimedia will have any negative affects on writing?
